The Tribe Of Alberta
We Leave Nobody Behind
What Would an Independent Alberta Look Like?
The Tribe of Alberta begins with a question many Albertans have quietly considered: if Alberta were independent today, would its people choose to enter Confederation under its existing terms?
Mike Heier explores the structural problems he believes have made Alberta’s relationship with Canada increasingly unequal. He addresses equalization, federal regulation, resource control, bureaucracy, political representation, and the economic consequences of dependence. Yet the book does not stop at explaining the problem.
Across twenty-three chapters and twelve extensive appendices, Heier develops a practical framework for an independent republic. He considers constitutional limits, citizen rights, taxation, sovereign wealth, energy corridors, healthcare reform, rural infrastructure, policing, defence, immigration, education, media, and administrative competence.
Underlying every proposal is the “One Tribe” principle: all committed Albertans belong, everyone carries responsibility, and no citizen or community should be abandoned.
Why Read It?
The Tribe Of Alberta
We Leave Nobody Behind
The Tribe of Alberta does not merely argue that the existing relationship between Alberta and Confederation has failed. It asks the harder and more important question: what should replace it?
Readers are presented with a broad framework for building an independent, functional, and constitutionally restrained tribe. Mike Heier explores how Alberta could protect individual rights, manage its natural resources, strengthen rural communities, reform healthcare, secure its borders, develop defence capabilities, and return meaningful authority to citizens.
Whether readers support independence, oppose it, or remain undecided, this book offers them a serious foundation for examining Alberta’s past, questioning its present, and considering its possible future.
